Born in Russia and forced into exile in the 1990s for his queer activism and literature, Mogutin has brought together his 25 years of experience, and work documenting queer existence innative Russia.
Mogutin frames sexuality as integrated into lived experience, rather than isolated into a spectacle. He views his work as an ethical act, using it as a witness into lived truth and intimacy into desire.
Representation or queer identity is not the goal. Instead he aims to showcase fragments of lived encounters through an autobiographical view, allowing them to speak for themselves, instead of claim a fixed identity.
Later in his career he focused on pre-stonewall queer art and literature. He views this as more experimental, dangerous, political and emotionally charged. Unrestricted to those impulses and desires structured societal norms allow you to hide behind.
